Course Description

A commonly overlooked modality when it comes to treating infants and young children, is using kinesiotape to support orofacial function and feeding skills. This course provides information and treatment suggestions based on skin anatomy, neural organization, and sensorimotor approach to orofacial taping. We will cover safety precautions, proper handling and tape application, frequency, removal, and more.  Participants will practice clinical knowledge and application in the experiential taping lab.

Course Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify 3 safety precautions with orofacial taping.

  2. Demonstrate understanding of the purpose and use of orofacial taping.

  3. Demonstrate 3 therapeutic applications of orofacial taping.

Agenda

8:30 - 9:30 am: Check-in, breakfast provided, find your seat

9:30 - 9:35 am: Welcome, announcement and speaker introduction

9:35 – 11:00 am: Anatomy and Function of Orofacial Taping: a focus on the skin organ

11:00 – 11:15 am: Morning Break

11:15 – 12:45 pm: Treatment rationale and functional indications for feeding, oral rest posture and nasal breathing

12:45 – 1:15 pm: Lunch

1:15 – 2:45 pm: Considering the sensory system 

2:45 – 3:00 pm: Afternoon Break

3:00 – 4:30 pm: Taping Lab

Instructional Methods

The speaker will be using a lecture with slides, case studies and time allotted for question & answer.

Lab Materials

A roll of kinesiotape is required for the course. You may choose to bring your own kinesiotape or opt to purchase a roll through Integrative Education (IE) for $14. If purchased through IE, the kinesiotape will be available the day of the course. Be sure to select the lab materials for Course G at registration if choosing to purchase through IE.

Course Requirements

In order to qualify for AOTA CEUs, you must attend at least 3 hours of the course (for partial credit), meet at least 2 of the objectives for the course and sign in and out on the sheets provided documenting your attendance at the course. After completing a self-evaluation, you will be emailed a course certificate within one week of the event.

Continuing Education

6 Contact Hours awarded if course requirements are met. Integrative Education is an AOTA Approved Provider, number 11607.
