Course Description

In this workshop participants will explore and experience the how and why behind trauma-responsive mind-body practices to create a sense of safety for children, youth, and staff, maximizing their ability to heal and learn.

 

Bring science into practice bridging Dr. Bruce Perry's Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics and the role of the vagus nerve in counterbalancing flight, fight, freeze, as you create safe spaces with movemindfully Breathe Move Rest strategies. Learn and experience how to address stress/distress, high energy, and big emotions in a variety of settings and situations.

Course Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Use mind-body strategies to help youth balance their energy levels, manage stress/anxiety, and handle big emotions.

  2. Describe the role of the vagus nerve in the stress response.

  3. Identify simple practices to activate/tone the vagus nerve to establish feelings of safety.

  4. Implement mind-body practices for self-regulation and co-regulation to promote an environment of safety.

  5. Create a mindful space plan for your setting.

Agenda

8:30 - 9:30 am: Check-in, breakfast provided, find your seat

9:30 - 9:35 am: Welcome, announcements, and speaker introduction

9:35 - 11:00 am:  

  • Introduction to mindfulness practices using Inner Resources

  • Setting agreements for authentic/safe engagement

  • Foundational concepts of trauma-responsive practices

  • Getting started with movemindfully BREATHE MOVE REST practices for YOU

  • What is movemindfully?

  • Brain science and nervous system regulation

  • Downstairs brain interventions

  • Dr. Perry's Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics framework in relation to mind-body practices

11:00 - 11:15 am: Morning Break

11:15 - 12:45 pm:  

  • Research on yoga and mental health.

  • Vagus nerve and interventions to assist with creating a sense of safety.

  • How to regulate and create a sense of safety within yourself to foster co-regulation with youth.

  • Creating mindful spaces.

  • BREATHE practices for calming and releasing stress/distress and trauma

12:45 - 1:15 pm: Lunch

1:15 - 2:45 pm:

  • Strategic MOVE practices for flight, fight, and freeze responses in the brain and nervous system

  • Sequencing BREATHE MOVE REST practices to meet youth needs

2:45  - 3:00 pm: Afternoon Break

3:00 - 4:30 pm:

  • Rx practices for anxiety and sleep

  • REST practices for regulation, healing, and integration

Instructional Methods

The speaker will be using a lecture with slides, experiential labs, large group discussion, and time allotted for question & answer.

Lab Materials

movemindfully Therapeutic Card Deck (35 Cards)- $21/deck. We will be using the Therapeutic Card Deck throughout this training. This card deck uses simple visuals, accessible text, and affirming language to introduce mind-body strategies to address stress, distress, and trauma. Designed for therapists, psych tech/aides, nurses, social workers, teachers, parents, and others working with youth in crisis. Suggested sequences for specific needs and times of day are included.

Course Requirements

In order to qualify for AOTA CEUs, you must attend at least 3 hours of the course (for partial credit), meet at least 2 of the objectives for the course and sign in and out on the sheets provided documenting your attendance at the course. After completing a self-evaluation, you will be emailed a course certificate within one week of the event.

6 Contact Hours awarded if course requirements are met. Integrative Education is an AOTA Approved Provider, number 11607.
